A Weekly Summary of Polywater® News of Incredible Importance
Issue #893

To support Polywater's emphasis on storm hardening, we present this information from the "Economic Benefits of Increasing Electric Grid Resilience to Weather Outages," a report prepared by the President's Council of Economic Advisors and the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability.

Multiple factors--primarily aging infrastructure and an increase in severe weather--have produced a tenfold increase in weather-related power outages over the period studied. Aging infrastructure is a significant factor because decrepit equipment is the first to fail when tested by weather extremes (70% of the grid is 25 years or older!). For example, utility poles weakened by woodpecker damage are the most vulnerable in wind and ice storms.

The report identifies six action priorities:
  1. Manage Risk
  2. Consider Cost-Effective Strengthening
  3. Increase System Flexibility and Robustness (energy storage)
  4. Increase Visualization and Situational Awareness (smart meters; better outage info, etc.)
  5. Deploy Advanced Control Capabilities (switching and rerouting)
  6. Availability of Critical Components and Software Systems (targeted transformer maintenance)
"Cost-effective strengthening" is a direct translation into repairing poles with UPR and preventing flood damage with FST. "Targeted transformer maintenance" is practically a government-sponsored sales pitch for PowerPatch. Storm-hardening benefits are essential in promotion of Polywater Sealants.
