A Weekly Summary of Polywater® News of Incredible Importance
Issue #859

In August 2013 we notified agents of looming format changes to the MSDS and certain package labels mandated by OSHA's adoption of the UN's Global Harmonized System (GHS) for regulation of chemicals. The intent is to facilitate international trade in chemicals and protect health and the environment by standardizing symbols and phrases on package labels and safety data sheets.

GHS labeling defines and standardizes chemical hazards, and communicates that to users via pictograms and precautionary statements. Pictograms must be printed in two colors, which adds cost. As part of the new system the term "MSDS" is replaced with "SDS", or safety data sheet.

Polywater will meet the GHS deadline of June 1, 2015, after which all new manufacturing must be GHS compliant. Thus, new labels with required pictograms will be appearing in May thru November. During this transition stock rotation will be more important than ever. Also, be ready to field calls from customers about the label changes and GHS rules. The factory is prepared to support you in this regard.

Eventually the new GHS format with scary pictograms on chemical labels will be commonplace, but initially users may respond with surprise and dismay to see warning images on their favorite products. It's important for chemical sales reps to be informed. To help educate you on GHS basics, we've created a fun little 13-question: Polywater GHS Quiz. Check your knowledge and learn how this photo of Jeff Ericson is relevant to GHS!
