A Weekly Summary of Polywater® News of Incredible Importance
Issue #785

Last week we introduced the FST & SolidSeal Quantity Calculator. After input, the tool calculates results for two potential scenarios: 20% or 0% cable fill. But what if customers estimate cable fill at 30%? With no option to change the fill percentage on the website, how do we calculate that scenario? In short, we don't.

Consider paint. Every can sold lists the surface area coverage. But they don't know how thick you'll apply it, or how much you'll allow to dry in pans and brushes, or how much you'll spill. Their "calculation" is an estimate ... with which billions of people manage to cope.

In a controlled lab setting it's possible for precise calculations. But we're dealing with infinitely variable field conditions. To pretend there are precise answers for each inquiry can be a disservice. Consider these additional factors in duct sealing:

Are all 4-inch ducts manufactured identically to have exactly 4-inch ID? No. We recommend inserting the foam dams 5 inches into larger ducts and 3 inches into smaller ducts. Do all installers measure this precisely? No. Are all installations performed in identical temperature and humidity conditions, which can affect the expansion of foam? No. Does each installer prime the mixing nozzle and fully pull and release the application trigger equally, making sure the exact amount of foam base is installed? No.

The truth is that we can't know or trust those data inputs any more than we can the customer's estimate of 30% fill. So the comparative results showing 20% and 0% fill are to provide a glimpse at the magnitude of effect on the quantity required. The goal is to give users ballpark quantity guidance. High-volume users will develop a good sense for usage over time. The calculator is a simple approximation tool. Promote it as such.
