A Weekly Summary of Polywater® News of Incredible Importance
Issue #781

A customer called with a technical question about UPR Utility Pole Repair: "Does UPR need protection from UV degradation?" Since you may field similar questions, we decided to share our response.

Cured Polywater UPR has good longevity in the field when exposed to environmental elements. We do not expect UV degradation to be a problem for UPR. We researched the technical data on other wood pole repair products to see if anyone offered UV information. No competitors appear to publish statements on UV resistance. We think this is because UV exposure is not a big concern with this application. A very small percentage of the application sees UV exposure; most of the sealant is contained inside the pole, out of direct sunlight.

With UPR, some minor discoloration takes place on the exposed surface over time. This is minimized by the colorant that we add to the formulation. The area of discoloration may see some slight variation in physical properties to a depth of about 1/16th of an inch, but not to the extent that it compromises the sealant's or the pole's integrity.

For customers that nevertheless remain concerned, to increase UPR's UV protection and longevity in the field, cured UPR can be sprayed with an outdoor UV-rated spray paint. These UV-rated spray paints are readily available through distributors or home improvement centers. We do not, however, want to promote the idea that spray painting UPR seals is a required step.

The Joke
Yoga vs. Liquor. The Friday Fax Editor occasionally substitutes funny images in place of jokes. This is one of those weeks. This photographic comparison of yoga and the effects of alcohol is pure genius and must be shared.
