A Weekly Summary of Polywater® News of Incredible Importance
Issue #772

Polywater agents should be aware of format changes coming to the MSDS and certain package labels. OSHA has adopted the United Nations' Global Harmonized System (GHS) for regulation of Classification, Labeling, and Packaging of chemicals (CLP). The new mandate is intended to facilitate international trade in chemicals and to enhance the protection of human health and the environment by standardizing symbols and phrases on package labels and safety data sheets.

The GHS labeling system defines and standardizes the hazards associated with chemicals and their use, and communicates that to users via pictograms (see examples at left) and precautionary statements. Labels with pictograms must be printed in two colors, which can add cost. After reformatting to the new system, the term "MSDS" will be replaced with "SDS", or safety data sheet.

U.S. chemical manufacturers must transition to the new format by June 1, 2015. Many will postpone changes as long as possible due to the associated costs. For Polywater alone, the changes needed to rewrite all MSDSs and reformat many of our labels will consume hundreds of hours and increase package costs on affected products.

Polywater Lubricants will likely avoid label pictograms; required changes will be limited to MSDS reformatting. However, labels on many adhesive and cleaner products will have to be redone to include two-color pictograms. These products must undergo a formal classification procedure to determine the appropriate images and statements. Our mixtures are covered by thousands of pages of regulatory language called "bridging principals". All classifications must be written and defendable under these rules. Polywater expects to be in full compliance with the GHS mandate by the deadline.

Eventually the new GHS format with scary pictograms on chemical labels will be commonplace, but initially users may respond with surprise and dismay to see images of skulls and dead fish on their favorite products. It's important for chemical sales reps to be informed.

The Joke
Dave Feherty Quotes.   Dave Feherty is a CBS Golf Channel announcer who finds very unique, colorful, and uninhibited ways of explaining or describing whatever is on his mind. If you watch golf on TV, he's often an announcer with a distinct Northern Ireland accent. A few choice Dave Feherty quotes are below.   1) "It would be easier to pick a broken nose, than a winner in that group." 2) "Fortunately, Rory is twenty-two years old, so his right wrist should be the strongest muscle in his body." 3) "That ball is so far left, Lassie couldn't find it if it was wrapped in bacon." 4) "I am sorry Nick Faldo couldn't be here this week. He is attending the birth of his next wife." 5) Jim Furyk's swing "... looks like an octopus falling out of a tree." 6) Describing VJ Singh's prodigious practice regime: "VJ hits more balls than Elton John's chin." 7) "That's a great shot with that swing." 8) "It's okay ... the bunker stopped it." 9) During the 2011 Masters Tournament at Augusta National: "It's just a glorious day. The only way to ruin a day like this would be to play golf on it." 10) "That was a great shot ... if they'd have put the pin there today." 11) "Watching Phil Mickelson play golf is like watching a drunk chasing a balloon near the edge of a cliff." 12) "That green appears smaller than a Pygmy's nipple."
