A Weekly Summary of Polywater® News of Incredible Importance
Issue #771

Everyone knows that unwanted water from flooding wreaks havoc on underground cable systems. Water in duct systems causes cable faults and flows into utility rooms, destroying expensive equipment. Good Polywater representatives already sell FST Foam Duct Block for electrical ducts or SDP Foam Duct Plug for communications conduits as a preventative measure against water ingress.

But water eventually flows away, gets pumped out, or dries up. What's often left in its place--mud, silt, and clay--is less often discussed, but is equally problematic. This is especially true in urban settings with crowded networks that have many manholes, cable vaults, hand holes, or other access points that are vulnerable to flooding and the accumulation of debris.

Silted ducts affect cable clearance and conduit fill. Installation of new cables or the removal of old cables is greatly hampered. Gritty residue also damages cable jackets during later pulls. Low-tech shoveling or more sophisticated high-pressure vacuum systems are used to clear vaults, but removing and cleansing mud from inside conduits--especially with energized cables--is a big challenge.

Crews employ a variety of techniques to remove silt from ducts: rodders, air compressors, garden hoses, leaf blowers, mandrills, pressure washers, etc. These are time-consuming and labor-intensive even when successful on vacant ducts, and can be risky with energized cable. The solution is prevention. The same FST and SDP duct plugs that keep water out of those ducts will also prevent silt from entering.

Creeks rise, stormy seas surge inland, dams break, water mains burst. Flooding comes in many, sometimes unexpected, forms. The people charged with designing, installing, or maintaining the integrity of underground electrical and communications systems need to know that FST and SDP are an integral part of sound conduit design. These high-performance products can prevent enormous reclamation costs that far outweigh the price of installation. Be sure to talk about manhole mud mitigation when promoting FST or SDP.

The Joke
More Old People Jokes.   1) An elderly couple on a cruise were standing on the back of the boat watching the moon during a storm when a big wave washed the woman overboard. They searched for days with no luck, so the captain sent the old man ashore and promised to notify him as soon as they found her. Three weeks went by and finally the old man got a fax from the boat: "Sir, sorry to inform you, we found your wife dead at the bottom of the ocean. We hauled her on deck, and attached to her butt was an oyster with a pearl worth $50,000. Please advise." The old man faxed back: "Send me the pearl and re-bait the trap." 2) A funeral service was held for a woman who'd just died. At the end, the pallbearers jarred the casket they were carrying when they accidentally bumped into a wall. They heard a faint moan. They opened the casket and ... the woman was still alive! She lived for ten more years, and then died. Once again a ceremony was held, and at the end of it the pallbearers were again carrying out the casket. As they carried the casket towards the door, the husband cried out, "Watch that wall!" 3) I once noticed an old lady on a park bench sobbing. I asked her what was wrong. She said, "I have a 22-year-old husband at home. He caresses me every morning and then makes me pancakes, sausage, fresh fruit and freshly ground coffee." I said, "Well, then why are you crying?" She said, "He makes me homemade soup for lunch and my favorite brownies, and cuddles me all afternoon." I said, "Then why the tears?" She said, "For dinner he makes me a gourmet meal with wine and my favorite dessert, and then makes love to me all evening." I said, "Why in the world are you crying?" She said, "I can't remember where I live!"
