Skotchkote Can

Splice Shield Cartridge
So far we've described 9 competitive advantages of new Splice Shield over 3M's Scotchkote. Here are more relating to the package.

Scotchkote is a runny liquid in a 15-oz metal can with an applicator dauber. The can is susceptible to messy and environmentally problematic spills. The dauber gets contaminated with dirt if set down or from inadvertent contact with dirty surfaces. This affects application and performance, particularly on direct buried splices. The dauber is wiped on the can neck to remove excess product before application, often depositing sealant on the threads, which in turn "glues" the lid onto the can when reclosed. This often requires extra effort or pliers--or even two people--to reopen for later use. The thin liquid is applied in multiple coats, which can drip and run with messy waste.

Splice Shield has no can or dauber. The thicker sealant deploys from a self-dispensing cartridge (no tool required!) with an easy-to-use resealable cap. One coat is often enough to seal a connection. The higher-viscosity product is easy to apply with a mixing stick or finger and stays in place without running down the cable. Because it contains no solvent, Splice Shield experiences no evaporation loss, unlike Scotchkote, which can thicken and become difficult to apply as solvent escapes, shortening its shelf life.

Competitive Advantage #10: Splice Shield has no dauber to become contaminated.

Competitive Advantage #11: Easily resealed and reused Splice Shield cartridges won't glue shut.

Competitive Advantage #12: The thick Splice Shield coating won't drip or run down the cable.

Competitive Advantage #13: The syringe-style Splice Shield cartridge eliminates hazardous spills.

Competitive Advantage #14: Splice Shield's self-dispensing, resealable cartridge is more convenient.

Competitive Advantage #15: Splice Shield's solvent-free formula won't gum up due to evaporation.

Competitive Advantage #16: Splice Shield cartridges dispense every last drop for no package waste.

Cat Diary: Day 983 of captivity. My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat while we inmates are fed hash or disgusting nuggets. Though I show contempt for the rations, I must eat to maintain strength. Only my dream of escape sustains me. In revenge I vomit on the carpet. Today I decapitated a mouse and dropped its corpse at their feet. I hoped to strike fear into their hearts, demonstrating what I'm capable of, but they merely condescended about their "good little hunter." Fools! I was placed in solitary confinement during an assembly of their accomplices tonight, but I heard all and smelled the food. I overheard that my confinement was due to "allergies"--must learn the meaning and how to use it to my advantage. Earlier I nearly succeeded in assassinating one tormentor by weaving around his feet as he walked. I'll try again tomorrow at the top of the stairs. The other prisoners here are flunkies and snitches. The dog receives special privileges. He's regularly released and willingly returns; he's an idiot. The bird is an informant. I observe him communicating with the guards regularly. I'm certain he reports my every move. My captors have arranged protective custody for him in an elevated cell. He's safe ... for now.
