A Weekly Summary of Polywater® News of Incredible Importance
Issue #714

Sometimes the natural selection process takes too long. Underperformers must be "encouraged" to step aside and make way for overachievers. Ranchers call this culling the herd.

According to Wikipedia: "Culling is the process of removing breeding animals from a group based on specific criteria. This is done either to reinforce certain desirable characteristics or to remove certain undesirable characteristics from the group. For livestock and wildlife alike, culling usually implies the killing of the removed animals."

Like ranchers, manufacturers too must cull the herd. Their specific criteria for removal are typically low-volume and low-margin products. When those packages are culled, only SKUs with desirable characteristics (high volume and margins) remain. Sometimes entire product lines go. Sometimes just individual packages within a product line must go.

Reps should be aware that Polywater is doing a bit of culling. You were already notified that FST-180 cartridges are being culled in favor of FST-250 cartridges. Now Premise Loop Lube (catalog prefix RL) is being phased out in favor of Polywater FTTx, Polywater CLR, or other suitable alternatives. Other lesser-known and typically special-order packages will follow as we review our full product line.

In each case, the culling process may take time as we contact customers to discuss alternative packages, work through remaining inventory, and update marketing materials. Obviously, reps with affected customers will be involved in any transition.

The Joke
The Hotel Bill. An elderly couple is traveling by car on a long road trip. After many hours on the road they were too tired to continue, and decided to take a room. They only planned to sleep for four hours and then resume. When they checked out four hours later the desk clerk handed them a bill for $350. The man exploded and demanded to know why the charges were so high. He told the clerk that although it was a nice hotel, the rooms certainly weren't worth $350 for four hours. The clerk told him that $350 was the "standard rate." He insisted on speaking to the manager. The manager appeared, listened to him, and then explained that the hotel had an Olympic-sized pool and a huge conference center that were available to them. "But we didn't use them," the old man said. "Well, they're here and you could have," explained the manager. He went on to explain that the couple could also have taken in one of the shows for which the hotel was famous. "The best entertainers from New York, Hollywood, and Las Vegas perform here," he said. "But we didn't see any shows," the husband said. "Well, we have them, and you could have," the manager said. No matter what amenity the manager mentioned, the husband replied, "But we didn't use it!" The manager was unmoved, and eventually the husband agreed to pay. He asked his wife to write the check. She did and gave it to the manager. He was surprised when he looked at it. "But ma'am, this is only made out for $50." "That's correct. I charged you $300.00 for sleeping with me," she said. "But I didn't!" exclaimed the manager. "Well, too bad, I was here, and you could have," she said as they walked out.
