Electrical and communications contractors often come into contact with fiberglass insulation on jobsite, even when they aren't the ones installing it. As many know, such contact causes annoying and painful irritation to unprotected skin. Grime-Away Wipes can help alleviate the discomfort quickly on site.
Fiberglass insulation contains small strands of glass fiber. Contact with fiberglass can force fiber particles into skin pores, irritating them and causing the itching sensation. The standard advice for treatment is:
- Do not rub the skin. Stand in a cold shower to rinse particles off the outside surface of your skin. Cold water closes skin pores and only allows the fiberglass on the skin surface to be removed. Do not wipe with a rag.
- Next, shower with hot water. Hot water opens skin pores so particles can be wiped away.
- With a clean wet rag make downward, one-direction wiping motions from shoulders to hands. The rag pulls fiberglass out of pores as it passes across them, and the water washes it away. Don't rub back and forth against the skin, as this only pushes particles deeper. Only use downward wiping motions.
- Switch back to a cold shower and rinse again without wiping. Cold water closes pores again to prevent lingering fibers from getting back into the skin. Continue rinsing with the cool water for three to five minutes.
As helpful as this advice is, it's impractical for a contractor working "on the clock", 25 miles from home on a jobsite with no working shower, no hot water, and perhaps no water or clean rags of any kind.
