Southwire's new NoLube™ SIMPull THHN®.
No Lubricant?
Many agents have expressed interest in APC's opinion of a new low-friction cable jacket on the market.   Southwire's NoLube SIMPull THHN® is an enhanced THHN (nylon) jacketed cable touted as easier to pull in conduit--so easy that no lubricant is required.   APC's laboratory has initiated testing of SIMPull in a variety of duct types and run/bend configurations.   Until such testing is complete, a detailed analysis is not possible.   However, based on tests done thus far we can generalize as follows:
  • THHN jackets (like most others) show wide pulling friction variability from one duct type to another.   SIMPull appears similarly affected.
  • Many duct types show significant friction differences from one manufacturer to another, i.e., EMT appears to be made with a variety of internal coatings.
  • Thus, blanket statements that SIMPull (or any other cable) produces X% friction reduction or .X coefficient of friction are impossible.   The specifics of duct type and manufacturer must be considered.
  • Polywater® Lubricants further reduce friction on SIMPull, making them beneficial in most cases and necessary in many.   Lubricants reduce pulling tension, cable damage, and the need for assists and splices.   Lubricants are a true and proven source of labor savings.   APC continues to develop applicators and new formulations (such as SPY Lube) to make application easier and less messy.
  • THHN is only one of many cable jacket types.   SIMPull's technology can't be easily applied to other jackets, nor does its introduction have any impact on the need for lubrication of other jackets.   All cables won't soon be "lube free."
APC will be able to provide more information in the future, but that will not come in the form of an endorsement or criticism.   We hope to be able to offer friction data to engineers and end users who could then base lubrication decisions on the specifics of their pulling situations.   In the meantime, we do not believe that the advent of commercially available slick-jacketed cables such as SIMPull heralds the demise of the cable lubricant market.

The Friday Fax Editor's Joke of the Week
The Joke
Nine Months Later.   Jack went on a ski trip with his buddy, Bob.   They loaded up Jack's car and headed north.   After driving a few hours they got caught in a terrible blizzard, so they pulled into a nearby farm and asked the attractive lady who answered the door if they could spend the night.   "I realize it's terrible weather out there and I have this huge house all to myself, but I'm recently widowed," she explained.   "I'm afraid the neighbors will talk if I let you stay in my house."   "Don't worry," Jack said, "We'll be happy to sleep in the barn.   And if the weather breaks, we'll be gone at first light."   The lady agreed, and the two men found their way to the barn and settled in for the night.   Come morning, the weather had cleared.   They went on their way and enjoyed a great weekend of skiing.   But about nine months later, Jack got an unexpected letter from an attorney.   It took a while, but he figured out that it was from the lawyer of the attractive widow they'd met on the ski trip.   He dropped in on his friend and asked, "Bob, do you remember that good-looking widow from the farm we stayed at on our ski trip up north about nine months ago?"   "Yes, I do," said Bob.   "Did you happen to get up in the middle of the night and go up to the house to pay her a visit?"   "Well, um, yes," Bob said, a little embarrassed, "I have to admit that I did."   "And did you happen to give her my name instead of telling her your name?"   Bob's face turned beet red and he said, "Yeah, look, I'm sorry, buddy.   I'm afraid I did.   Why do you ask?"   Jack smiled and said, "She just died and left me everything."
