![]() Sacrificial Galvanic Action? |
APC's claim that its Type CG™ aerosol "prevents rust and inhibits corrosion through sacrificial galvanic action", often evokes images of druidic weirdness and prompts agents to say, "Sacrificial what?" Galvanizing is the process of dipping steel in hot, molten zinc. Zinc oxidizes (rusts) much more slowly, less destructively, and less visually (silvery-white) than steel. The result is a metal coating that bonds better, looks good longer, and protects steel better than paint. Since "hot-dipping" is not very practical in the field, the next best thing was developed: cold galvanizing. This is essentially spray paint with zinc added. It's portable, inexpensive, easy to apply, looks like silver paint, and offers the sacrificial zinc protection. It's not quite as effective as hot zinc galvanizing, but is definitely superior to normal paint. In essence, the zinc coats the surface, sacrificing itself on Mother Nature's alter by rusting, and protects the critical metal parts beneath. Think of it as "metallic martyrdom." Virgins are optional. |
![]() LSHF Cable Examples |
APC has modified its cable compatibility statement for Polywater ® J to include: "Not Recommended for LSZH Cables." Three months ago we advised you to be aware of a broad new class of cable jacket materials experiencing compatibility problems with cable pulling lubricants. These chemically unique fire-retardant cable jackets are known as "low smoke zero halogen" or "low smoke halogen free" under the acronyms "LSZH" or "LSHF." You were advised to refer LSZH/LSHF customers to APC's lab for compatibility discussions and/or lubricant recommendations--and to avoid claims of compatibility with Polywater lubes. Our laboratory continues to progress with its research. Until this project is complete we can make no definitive recommendation that a specific lubricant is compatible. But we have concluded that Polywater J is not compatible--at least with the limited group of cable samples tested so far. We must act responsibly and make no representations otherwise. The industry looks to APC for the latest, deepest, and most honest advice in technical aspects of cable lubrication. Let's not let them down, even when it limits the sale of our own product. |
![]() The Joke |
Processing Job Applicants. Put 100 bricks in some particular order in a room with a window. Send 2 or 3 candidates into the room and close the door. Come back after 6 hours and analyze the situation. If they are counting the bricks, put them in the accounts department. If they are recounting them, put them in auditing. If they have messed up the whole place with the bricks, put them in engineering. If they are arranging the bricks in some strange order, put them in planning. If they are throwing the bricks at each other, put them in operations. If they are sleeping, put them in security. If they have broken the bricks into pieces, put them in information technology. If they are sitting idle, put them in human resources. If they say they have tried different combinations, yet not a brick has been moved, put them in sales. If they have already left for the day, put them in marketing. If they are staring out of the window, put them in strategic planning. Last but not least, if they are talking to each other and not a single brick has been moved, congratulate them and put them in top management. |
