Issue #404

New Polywater® CLR Clear Lubricant.
Polywater® CLR Clear Lubricant
Attention telecom and contractor/industrial reps!   APC now offers you an excellent response to Ideal Industries' ClearGlide™ Lubricant.   New Polywater® CLR Clear Lubricant is a crystal-clear gel pulling lubricant for general electrical and datacom applications.   It is available in quart and gallon containers (and 5-gallon pails on special order).   Its superior friction reduction out-performs ClearGlide™ hands down.   What's our plan of action?   Introduce CLR wherever ClearGlide™ is well entrenched and other product offerings (Dyna-Blue, Polywater J or SP, etc.) have been rejected.   We're planning no huge splash, no national advertising.   New CLR is a product to promote on a case-by-case basis in head-to-head competition with ClearGlide (or other clear lubes) after other tactics have failed.

Why won't APC make a major push with new CLR?   Transparency is an aesthetic feature, not a virtue.   Ideal introduced ClearGlide as a non-staining lube in response to years of complaints about their own Yellow 77® and Aqua-Gel II®.   But all Polywater lubes are non-staining, and have been for decades.   We prefer to focus on lubrication performance and cable compatibility rather than how cute a lube is (although our clear Polywater G has been handsome for over 30 years!).   The reality is that ClearGlide is a mediocre lubricant, and its claim to be the first clear lube is ridiculously false.   That said, it's hard to argue with success.   Ideal's distribution strength and ClearGlide's attractive appearance have resulted in sales penetration.   We recognize that sometimes you can talk about friction reduction, compatibility, and residue combustibility until you're blue in the face and some folks just want their clear lube.   New CLR is for these people.   It is a tactical sales response.   It is not a strategic shift away from emphasizing the superior performance and application features of Polywater J, SP, NB, et al.   Talk carefully with your regional manager about if and when to pull this product out of your bag.

The Friday Fax Editor's Joke of the Week
The Joke
Joke of the Week:   Sven and Ole.   All of his young life Ole had heard stories of an amazing family tradition.   It seems that his father, grandfather and great-grandfather had all been able to walk on water on their 21st birthday.   On that day, they'd walk across the lake to the boat club for their first legal drink.   So when Ole's 21st birthday came around, he and his pal Sven took a boat out to the middle of the lake.   Ole stepped out of the boat and nearly drowned!   Sven just managed to pull him to safety.   Furious and confused, Ole went to see his grandmother.   "Grandma, it's my 21st birthday, so vy can't I valk across da lake like my father, his father, and his father before him?"   Granny looked into Ole's eyes and said, "Because, you idiot, your father, grandfather and great grandfather ver born in January.   You ver born in July!"
